Giving back and community involvement are core pillars of our business in the locations that we operate in. Our Turks and Caicos Grace Bay team recently launched a community Learn to Sail and Swim program with the Boys and Girls from the Ed Garland Youth Center.
Ross Darmody, RED’s Beach Operations Manager commented:
We had another picture perfect day for our second session of our Learn to Sail and Swim program with the boys and girls from the Ed Garland Youth Center. This week we had 12 participants this week and we couldn’t have asked for better conditions.
We began with a recap of what we had learned in the previous session, I didn’t want it to feel like we were in a classroom so, to make it fun, we played hangman! They were amazing, they remembered all of the terms. We then spent the next 15 minutes learning the points of sail and how you should set your sail depending on the wind direction and they used this knowledge when they were sailing later that morning.
Next we put our lifejackets on and went for a swim off the beach, around the yellow mark and back to shore. Already it was clear to see the progress they have made, everyone was more confident about completing the exercise than they were last week.
Finally we broke up into 3 groups of 4 and they rotated between Sailing, Swimming and Standup Up Paddleboard training. Nikito, Luke and myself were the 3 instructors and we were impressed with how much the students remembered from the previous week.
When I was speaking with EGYC Director, Roxann Wake-Forbes, I had asked her if there was any feedback from the previous week, she said “They had a blast and it shows, they’re all back again this week and they brought some of their friends!”
We look forward to another fun morning on the water with them again next Saturday.
